Piercing the Veil

Magnum heard a zing and a soft thud behind her. She
glanced back at the closest tree from where she knelt on the
forest floor and saw a still-quivering arrow stuck in the tree at
head height. Scanning the forest, she saw the archer
standing as if in a trance, long bow pulled back and a
second arrow nocked and aimed at her face.
This was not the retirement that Detective Sergeant
Magnum Schultz had envisioned when she said goodbye to
her department. So much for the relaxation of feeding goats
and chickens and weeding a vegetable garden.
